Juliette Rose.

Juliette Petra Rose van der Laarse – Dreamer. Risk taker. Idealist. Often failing. Always trying. What carries me through is that I truly love what I do.

My name is Juliette, I was born in Amsterdam in 1992 and I am a Student and Business Owner. I am eager to learn, curious, creative, innovative and optimistic. Being well aware of my own mortality I live life to the fullest. I am driven, passionate and ambitious. Although I fully realize that a substantial revenue is needed to run a successful business, on a personal level I care more about fulfilling- and living my dreams than earning a lot of money.

I am a risk taker and enjoy venturing into the unknown. I am an unabashed idealist. I believe honesty and transparency prevail. I dare to speak my mind and stand up for what I believe. For me there is no such thing as dreaming too big. I’ve faced plenty of struggles along the way, but I’ve never let them stop me. I am often failing, but always trying. What carries me through is that I truly love what I do.

I did not always plan to go into academia but after my switch from the Amsterdam to Leiden University my interest in academics grew overnight. I draw knowledge from design science, humanities, social sciences, and law. I am mostly interested in doing transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary research. I like using concepts from one academic field as a tool/framework/academic lense to rediscover concepts from another field. For example, what if we can use network theory to identify correlations between (Dutch) laws? And then use data science to suggest updates in the law when new technologies rendered these laws obsolete?

I am still a junior so most of my ideas might be naive or even silly. But I like playing around with it and it always sparks interesting conversations with the professors I admire. For me, academia is far from the boring field most people believe it to be. When working on a research idea I feel like an overly excited puppy, coming up with new ideas and new perspectives and finding out if those would work or have been considered before. Working on official or personal research projects is the quickest way for me to learn.

In the third year of secondary education, Dutch students have to choose a curriculum profile.

The Dutch system offers 4 profiles:
1. C&M, Culture and Society (Art and Humanities)
2. E&M, Economy and Society (Management and Sociology)
3. N&G, Nature and Health (Life Sciences)
3. N&T, Nature and Technology (Physical Sciences)

Students have to choose between four types of mathematics:
1. Math C, basic math. !! For Culture and Society students only
2. Math A, odds and statistics
3. Math B, algebra and geometry for exact sciences
4. Math D, a more extensive version of math B which includes math A and extra challenges like the basics of game theory, cryptography, and combinatorics.

I followed both the N&G and N&T profiles, Math D, and took two free electives: Tailoring and Computer Science. For my final research, I simulated the automation process of flower auction Royal Flora Holland in Microsoft Access MySQL (see projects).
